What Are Custom Metal Stamping Parts?
A custom stamped part is manufactured according to a customer’s drawing, sample or functional requirements. Depending on the geometry and production volume, the manufacturing route may include:
- Blanking and piercing
- Bending and forming
- Deep drawing
- Coining and embossing
- Progressive die stamping
- Compound die stamping
- Secondary machining
- Welding, riveting or assembly
- Plating, painting or other surface treatments
The appropriate process depends on the part’s shape, material, tolerances, annual demand and quality requirements.
Common Metal Stamping Processes
Progressive Die Stamping
Progressive dies perform several operations as metal strip moves through multiple stations. They are generally suited to repeat orders and medium- or high-volume production.
Their main advantages include consistent production, reduced manual handling and efficient cycle times. However, the initial tooling investment may be higher than that of simpler dies.
Single-Operation Stamping
A single-operation die performs one forming or cutting operation per press stroke. It can be suitable for simple components, prototypes or lower production volumes.
Several separate dies may be required when the part involves multiple operations.
Compound Die Stamping
A compound die performs multiple cutting operations in one press stroke. It is often considered for relatively flat parts that require accurate relationships between holes and outside profiles.
Deep Drawing
Deep drawing forms sheet metal into cups, shells, housings and other hollow shapes. Material formability, drawing depth, corner radii and lubrication must be evaluated before tooling is finalized.
